Happy Holidays from the Durio Family!

So, what are some of our favorite traditions?

blog 4When our daughters were young, we started what has become a special Christmas Eve tradition. After we get home from Christmas Eve church services, we open one present each, and while the contents no longer are a surprise – new pajamas – the surprise comes in the “theme” for the year. We’ve had everything from sports-themed PJ pants, to super heroes, cartoon characters, favorite hobbies, alma maters and most recently – matching sets. We change into our new arrivals before enjoying a big bowl of tortilla soup with tamales. Many a Christmas Day we’ve stayed in those pajamas for the better part of the day!

And what do we love most about our home in the holidays?

We love our open kitchen/living space, especially during the holidays. We can all be together baking in the kitchen, while we’re watching football and enjoying a roaring fire. We love to bake, and especially during the holidays, the kitchen is the gathering place. Our center island is a great prep space, and I love my pull-out spice drawer that is beneath my cook top. Everything is within arms’ reach, and my cook’s pantry is huge. Our best holiday memories are in the kitchen, baking and decorating cookies, making bread, smelling apple cider on the stove, making big messes together! Then, collapsing in front of the television and fire for endless football!

Merry Christmas from JKD Builder and the Durio family!

Holiday Traditions: The Best Chapters of Our Lives

doginpoolrobincourtThere is always one house in the neighborhood where everyone hangs out; you are lucky if it’s yours.

Our home that Keith Durio built will forever be some the best chapters of our lives. With its open spaces, beautiful stone surroundings, and perfect layout; we worked, laughed and played as a family. From countless numbers of swim parties, birthdays, New Year’s Eve bashes, Halloweens, holidays, and never-ending family and friends in and out that beautiful wrought iron door, it was a part of us.

kissingdogrobincourtA tearful goodbye to our JKD Builder home on Robin Court and a new adventure led us to California a few years ago. But, as fate would have it, we have moved back and the first person we called was Keith. We can’t wait for the next chapters to unfold in our home.

Much love and appreciation,
The Evans

New Holiday Traditions: Christmas through the Eyes of a Child

What we love most about your home during the holidays.

My husband and I purchased our home three and a half years ago. Needless to say, it needed some work done. We quickly enlisted the help of JKD Builders to assist us in turning this house into a home we could be proud of. I’m very happy to say we have completed almost all the projects, inside and out, we dreamed of.

web size 1-2339The biggest project to date was transforming our very small and outdated kitchen into a large, inviting space for our family and guests. JKD Builders was with us every step of the way. Knowing very little about kitchen remodeling, we relied on Keith and his team and they outdid themselves. This Christmas, our home is just a little bit sweeter after the birth of our first daughter, Caroline Lisa. (It goes to show how patient Keith is, seeing as we took on the enormous task of transforming our kitchen when I was five months pregnant!!). Seeing Christmas through a child’s eyes makes the holiday season that much more enjoyable. I love that this year we can dance through our brand new kitchen, singing Christmas carols, all while watching Caroline amazed by the lights on the Christmas tree. Our new kitchen and beautiful baby girl have made this house a home, and we are so excited to celebrate this holiday season.

Our favorite holiday traditions.

My husband is going to laugh at me, but my favorite holiday tradition is running down the steps on Christmas morning to see if Santa came. Yes, my family still does this and my brother, sister and I are all in our […]

Holiday Traditions in our Home Sweet Texas Home

carpenter living room 12-2014Our “Home Sweet Texas Home” of 10 years is more than a place to live and be with family during the holidays. It is also home to Front Porch Psychotherapy, my counseling practice. With 1.5 acres of both native and landscaped areas, water features and an expansive porch to welcome clients, 17049 Trail of the Woods feels more like a retreat center than a house. Our two naturally born therapy dogs, Rio and Molly, greet all who come to the door with barks, then kisses. When the weather is good, we sit on rockers on the front porch, enjoying the peace and privacy.

Inside, windows all across the back let in natural light, which can uplift one’s mood. Our great room serves sometimes as a waiting room for parents of children and teens, where they have time to relax or get some work done while family members are in session. My private indoor office space looks out to the front porch. The atmosphere supports the perfect container for mind, spirit and body focused personal rejuvenation. The best thing is, I never have to leave my Durio home!

Happy Holidays! Sarah (and Rick) Carpenter

Holiday Traditions: Sweets, Sweaters, Skits, Skiing!

cookies2In the Mulloy household, our favorite Christmas traditions are filled with baking dozens of cookies, crazy sweaters and a glitter-filled kitchen the entire month of December. Of course there is nothing like that thrill we get when the first box of shiny ornaments is opened. It’s like a globe of joy explodes and everyone in the house goes crazy with energy!cookies1

Christmas Eve starts with a little cocktail party at my mother’s house, and ends with our girls’ theatrical narration of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Christmas day is filled with warm coffee, hot chocolate, gifting and special moments of reading holiday cards from family and friends.  A few days later when the sugar rush leaves, we head to Taos, New Mexico, for a few casual days, strolling the town square and praying our knees don’t give out at Taos Ski Valley.

Many blessings to JKD Builders and the Durio family during the holiday season!

Homes for the Holidays: Making Memories, Creating Traditions

Maybe it’s cliché, but there truly is no place like home for the holidays. As homebuilders, we at JKD Builder feel so blessed to help our clients create their dream homes and spaces where memories are made year-round, but especially, at the holidays. Over the 14 years we’ve been in business, we’ve built more than warm, comfortable rooms, inviting pools and relaxing outdoor entertainment areas. We’ve built lasting friendships with trusted supplier partners and with homeowners.

But for far too many, the dream of homeownership is just that – a dream. Habitat for Humanity is one of our favorite organizations, for the great work it does in helping others fulfill the dream that we are able to help our clients fulfill. With a mission to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope, Austin Habitat for Humanity builds affordable, energy-efficient,  quality homes for hardworking families in Central Texas in partnership with volunteers, private and public donors, and the community.

This season, we invited a few of our clients to share their favorite holiday home memories and traditions, while helping Habitat for Humanity. Over the next week, watch for our clients’ stories and photos on the JKD Builder blog. For every comment or share on their posts, JKD Builder will make a donation to Austin’s Habitat for Humanity. Share your stories, too! What are your favorite holiday traditions and memories?

Lake Travis Schools Continue to be a Draw

The Lakeway community continues to be a hot market, and among the attractions is its stellar school district. What began in 1981 as a one-school ISD with 500 students across a 118-mile territory has grown today to nine campuses, with 1,050 employees serving a whopping 8,800 students.

Brad LancasterThe JKD Builder team had the privilege of hearing LTISD Superintendent Brad Lancaster share details about the district at the November Home Builders Association Lakeway/Bee Caves Chapter meeting.

“We’ve seen astonishing growth in the Lake Travis district,” he said, noting nearly 70% growth in the study body in the last 10 years alone. “We have 600 new students move to the district this year, and the projection is that we will be at 13,085 by 2022.”  There’s not been a single year in which LT school enrollment hasn’t been on the uptick.

Why are people moving here? Lancaster says several factors make the Lake Travis schools a draw:

  • Consistently high state passing rates;
  • A highly educated population  – nearly 60% of Lakeway area residents have bachelor’s degrees or higher.
  • A high median income level, in excess of $87,341.
  • A low economically disadvantaged population (14%)
  • And, a strong positive perception of the school district.

laketravismapThe draw of great schools is driving demand for new homes in the district, especially for custom homes in the city of Lakeway, where residents can access an array of community amenities with no homeowner association fee. JKD Builder’s custom home in the heart of Lakeway is a rare chance to live steps from tennis, pools, gym, trails, lake access – and award-winning schools! Drive […]

What Makes a JKD Builder Home Special? Here’s what one customer says.

We were overwhelmed with this email we recently received from one of our home buyers. When this couple came to us, they were seeking to shorten their work commute while retaining the country-living feel they had in their existing Dripping Springs property. Having had a previous ‘money pit’ home experience – a poorly constructed home that ultimately had to be demolished and cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars – made them cautious. They were looking for a builder who demonstrated quality and integrity. We are honored that they chose a JKD Builder home. Read their story.

“There is that moment, a feeling that overcomes you as you experience it. It’s a moment that says “ I can relax now, I am home.” That is the feeling we get when we walk into our JKD home. From the minute we close the garage doors and enter the hall to the spacious living area, the world behind is shut out and the quiet interior beckons. A quick drop of the briefcase in the spacious home office and we walk down the hall into the kitchen with its classic lines but modern flair resplendent with modern lighting and stainless backsplacsh. Off the kitchen is a terraced stairwell to a vista of trees that expand from the patio outside a wall of windows. This sets the stage for the feeling that you have arrived. You are home.

The living room is open enough for large parties but light enough to allow ambient sun to filter in throughout the day. The dining sits apart to allow for the intimate atmosphere of the dinner party. Flowing from one room to other […]

JKD Builder Welcomes Leadership Lake Travis to Lakeway Airpark

Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce member and Lakeway resident Keith Durio with JKD Builder helped welcome a group of approximately 35 local business leaders to the Lakeway Airpark on March 6. Keith coordinated with local pilots to provide complimentary aerial tours of the Lake Travis and Austin area to the participants, serving as air boss for the eight planes participating. Pilots included Jesse Beckett, Robert White, Phil Grgurich, Jeff Brinkman, John Reinschmidt, Rich Judd, Steve Zbranek and Burke Edwards. Other ground crew included Lakeway residents Mike Collier and Jean Thompson.

“Many thanks to all the pilots and ground crew who answered JKD Builder‘s call to help with the Leadership Lake Travis aerial tour last week,” said Keith Durio, president of JKD Builder. “The great turnout of pilots and assistants on the ground exemplifies the comaradarie and give-back atmosphere of Lakeway’s aviation community, which is one of the things that makes the Lakeway Airpark community so unique and special.”

Leadership Lake Travis is sponsored by the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce and provides a hands-on, interactive experience through which participants have the opportunity to enhance their personal and professional skills, gain a deeper understanding of community dynamics, and build a network of colleagues and associates in the south Lake Travis area.
